Do you need extra seating in your living room, a comfortable place to sit and read or just extra seating for occasional visitors? Adding an armchair to your living room can be an excellent way to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the space and it can also serve as a stylish accent piece that can elevate the overall design of your room. So, how do you select the perfect chair to fit your room, and decorating style and of course that is a perfect fit for you?

  1. Understanding the main function of the chair will help you determine the ideal style and features to look for in your search. For example, if you plan to use it for reading, a chair with a supportive backrest and armrests would be the most comfortable choice or if it’s for lounging and watching TV you may decide on a larger armchair to curl up in or add an ottoman so you can really relax. Adding a new piece of furniture to the room could be the ideal opportunity to reconfigure the room, maybe you can move the sofa to another position and then add a chair or two. Look at all the options before deciding on the chair.

  2. Evaluate the size and layout of your living room. Measure the area where you plan to place the armchair to ensure it fits comfortably without overcrowding the space. Consider factors such as the chair's dimensions, including width, depth, and height, as well as any other furniture in the room or architectural elements (a fireplace or gas heater for example) that may impact placement. Unless you’re very good at visualising, it can be a good idea to lay paper on the floor to create the space of the chair – you’ll then see if it sits comfortably within the space and leaves room for movement around the chair and between other furniture.

  3. Comfort is a crucial aspect of selecting an armchair. Look for a chair with adequate padding and cushioning to provide a cosy and supportive seat. Consider the seat depth and height to ensure a comfortable fit for your body – what is comfortable for a taller person may not be the ideal choice for a shorter person. If possible, test the chair by sitting in it to assess that the comfort level and support are what you are looking for.

  4. Style and aesthetics are also important factors to consider. The armchair should complement the overall decor and theme of your room. Decide on the desired style, whether it's modern, traditional, rustic, or eclectic, and look for chairs that align with that aesthetic.
